Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
