Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
