A Forecasting Platform Trader Earned $Nearly Half a Million on Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.
Changing Odds in Forecasts
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.
A particular user, which joined the platform recently and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.
Yet the odds had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.
Several of other individuals also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
